STUNT CYCLIST THRILLS CROWD
Stunt cyclist Jez Avery was the hit of the show at the weekend’s Mildenhall Cycling Rally. The Geordie enthralled and captivated the audience with his stunts and tricks, including jumping over 12 children and a finale that saw him produce an incredible double car jump over cars belonging to two of the organisers! He pulled in well over 3,000 cyclists and spectators, part of a total Rally attendance of between 6,000 and 7,000 that travelled from all corners of the UK that delighted the organisers Mildenhall Cycling Club, writes Mark Burchett.

The ramps Jez used for only the second time were manufactured by Thetford company, Portaramp, whose designer was none other than Mildenhall Cycling Club’s Dave Sennitt, who his younger days was a revered grass-track rider.

GRASS TRACK
The highlights of the grass-track programme were the Men’s and Ladies British Cycling National 800m Championships that dominated Saturday's packed six-hour grass-track racing programme that took place in searing temperatures. As expected host club rider Victoria Pendleton retained her crown for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year. The 21-year-old, who has been training full time with the National track squad since graduating from University in May, rode from the front and never looked in danger of being caught. Pendleton crossed the line four clear lengths ahead of London cycle-courier Chrissima Pearce, much to the delight of dad Max, who organised the grass-programme of this Forest Heath District Council backed Rally.

Scotland's Evan Oliphant (Velo Ecosse) took the Men's title to add to his 8km Championship he won earlier this year at Winterton in Humberside. He missed his first cousins wedding, where he should have been playing the bagpipes, to be at Mildenhall where he delighted the enthusiastic crowd with his strong riding from the front. He emerged in second at the first bend, but quickly took the lead and like Pendleton in the ladies, he then rode from the front controlling the race, doing enough to keep his challengers at bay. Oliphant, still only 20, has been the Champion in Scotland over 400m, 800m and 8km on the grass for the last four years.

Mildenhall’s Martin Kemp, in his first season of grass-track racing, claimed a creditable third in the 400m Handicap. He also formed part of the already established and very successful Mildenhall grass-track team of Max Pendleton, Keith Richardson and Richard Carrington, who yet again took the honours in the Willhire Team Pursuit.

SUNDAY RAINS
Sunday’s race programme was abandoned after a heavy shower of rain forced the riders off the track just as the final of the Kierin was about to be run. This was hugely disappointing, as the pace vehicle, a 1000cc motorbike driven by experienced grass-rider Martin Holland, had added real excitement to the spectacle.

After hundred’s had set up their caravans and tents on Friday at the Riverside Middle School venue, the Rally had began in earnest at 4am when 43 hardy souls started the 300km Audax Reliability Ride, followed by a hundred doing the 100km distance. The last rider finished just before midnight.

Sunday saw the Off-Road Challenge (orienteering on bikes) saw over 30 riders tackle the 35 mile course, with Matt Heywood the fastest of those that found all the markers. This was followed by the Children’s Duathlon, which saw the 86 children completing a run, a cycle and finishing with another run over distances to suit their age group. In the Under 7’s the youngest competitor in the Duathlon’s history, three year-old Sylvie Cook, finished to generous applause from the spectators, while Mildenhall’s Edward Rochford took second spot behind Amelia Coltman. Edward’s older sister, Helena finished tenth in the 7-9 year-old group. Matthew Cook finished eight in the 10-12 year category.

Helena and Matthew also took part in in the Cyclo-Cross, which although out of season, didn’t looked out of place on Monday morning under a damp and misty grey sky. Helena finished 21st and Matthew a very creditable fifth in their respective age groups. Helena’s dad Adrian finished seventh in the Vets, Ladies and Juniors race, (6th fastest Vet) in a race dominated Junior Ian Field.

In the headline race for Seniors, experienced campaigner Pete Middlehurst took the honours. The ‘Cross also had a three year-old competing, Rio Avery (Didcot Pheonix) who completed the Under 9’s race.

Over 130 packed into the hall on Sunday evening to hear international singer Pete Sayers, who was followed by his good friend Dennis of Grunty Fen. As ever the ‘local yocal’ had the audience laughing with his quick wit and down to earth sense of humour. Both were able to share in the ‘in-jokes’ for both are also keen cyclists! While in the nearby Bell Hotel, Dave Sennitt in another guise as quiz-master, had the cyclists in 20 teams flexing their brain cells rather than their leg muscles!

After the British Schools Skills Tests on Monday morning, the afternoon programme was a mixture of MTB races, which Gary Coltman (Leics ORC) produced a clean sweep to also win the MTB Omnium, as well as races for the watching children and their parents. The damp weather on Monday didn’t deter many from snapping up some superb bargains on the second day of the Trade Show. “All traders reported increased takings from last year, particularly on the Sunday when the bumper crowd invaded them, contributing to sales in excess of a staggering £60,000 for both days” said Mark Burchett.

On behalf of the organisers Mark Burchett said “without an army of volunteers the Rally wouldn’t take place and we really do appreciate their efforts in making sure this nationally known event is another huge success” All the results, together with pictures, from the Rally can be found on www.mildenhallrally.org.uk.
